Planning for a school trip to the farm
To help you with the planning of your trip, we have answered some commonly asked questions for your information. If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to contact us on 020 20162824.
Insurance
The farms public liability insurance cover is with the National Farmers Union, and we have £5,000,000 of cover, you are welcome to view our certificate.
Risk Assessment
The farm has an active policy of reviewing risk assessment on annual basis.
We welcome teachers on a free preview visit to the farm.
Communications
During the time of your visit the farm has one incoming telephone
line, a fax and farm staff carry mobile telephones at all times.
In the event of an emergency farm staff have a system of dealing with it and
the farm has a first aid kit on site and at least one member of staff has a
certificate in first aid.
When you arrive at the farm you will be welcomed by one of our staff who will
explain what will be going on reinforcing the message that children should wash
their hands before they eat.
Paying for your visit
We recommend that one of your staff completes this task on arrival, cheques should be made payable to Thornhill Farm Shop and if groups are paying individually it helps us if you collect the money for your group.
Accessibility
The farm is accessible only to cars, mini buses and small 35 seater coaches. Wheelchair access is also available.
Clothing
Whilst it is a working farm we do try to keep you out of the mud and unless it is raining you will normally find the ground dry underfoot. We would recommend suitable out door clothing according to the time of year.
Supervision Levels
This is a choice for you depending on the age, maturity and behaviour of your pupils. We provide an undercover area portioned away from the animals for you to enjoy your refreshments.
In case of emergency
In the event of an emergency a member of staff will be available to help and/or contact emergency services.
Two of the farm’s staff have been trained in first aid and a well stocked first aid box is on site. Do remember to cover cuts when visiting the farm.
Allergies and pregnancy
Those who fit one of the above categories we would recommend they adopt extra precautions - please contact the farm for details.
Back at school
Obviously you need the consent of the parents and your education authority before embarking on a trip and you should ensure the safety of the vehicle the children are travelling in.
We want to ensure your visit is a fun learning experience.
